Why you are not getting interviews, and what actually works now

If you are sending out applications and hearing nothing, the problem is usually not you. The channel you are using has been commoditised on both sides.

Sending fifty, a hundred, two hundred applications into silence is one of the most demoralising experiences in a job search. It is easy to read that silence as a verdict on you. Usually it is a verdict on the channel.

What changed

Two years ago a decent application still had a fair chance of being read by a person. Then two things happened at once. Candidates started using AI to write applications, so volume exploded. Employers started using AI to screen them, so attention collapsed. The application became a document written by a machine and rejected by a machine.

On top of that, a meaningful share of postings are not even real openings. Some are "ghost jobs" collecting a pipeline for later or testing the market. You can do everything right and still hear nothing, because there was never a decision to be made.

Why applying harder makes it worse

The standard advice is to apply to more roles and polish your CV. That is advice to compete harder in the one channel that has been flooded on both sides. More applications into the same broken funnel produces more silence, not more interviews.

Where the signal moved

When every application looks polished and every CV hits the keywords, the one signal an employer can still trust is a human who says you are worth an hour. That is the introduction, the referral, the direct message that lands because it is specific and real. The channel that got more valuable is the one almost no one teaches.

What to do this week

  • Cut your application volume and put that time into three or four target companies.
  • Find the people who do the work you want and the managers above them.
  • Reach one of them with a specific, useful message, not a request for a job.
  • Ask for advice and a conversation. Let referrals and roles surface from there.

It is not you

The people getting interviews right now are not better applicants. They are working a different channel. Once you move your effort to conversations, timing, and referrals, the silence tends to break.

Common questions

How many applications is too many?

There is no magic number, but if applications are your main strategy, you are over-invested in the weakest channel. Redirect most of that time to direct outreach and referrals.

Is my CV the problem?

Occasionally, but usually not. When every CV is keyword-optimised, a better CV moves the needle far less than a human vouching for you does.

What are ghost jobs?

Listings that are not tied to a real, current opening. They inflate the sense that you are being rejected, when there was often no decision being made at all.

Reach the people who do the hiring, before the job is posted.
