How to get a job without applying online
The application portal is the most crowded, least effective way in. Here is how to run a search that goes around it.
You do not need the application portal to get hired. Plenty of people run an entire search through direct contact and referrals and never touch a job board except to see who is hiring. It is slower to start and far more effective once it moves.
Start with companies, not openings
Instead of searching for open roles, pick a short list of companies you would genuinely want to work for. Ten is plenty. This flips the search: you are no longer waiting for the right posting to appear, you are building a position at places you have chosen.
Map the people
For each company, find the person who would manage you and a couple of people doing the job you want. This is a LinkedIn exercise and it takes an afternoon. Now you have a map of who matters, whether or not a role is open.
Build a reason to be known
You cannot message a stranger asking for a job and expect much. You can become a familiar, useful name over a few weeks. Engage with their work honestly, share things worth sharing, and reach out with something specific when you have a real reason to.
No ask attached, no CV in the thread. Look what this does.
Ask for conversations, not jobs
The unit of this search is the conversation. A fifteen-minute call to learn about the team is easy to say yes to and tells you whether a fit exists. Those conversations surface roles that were never posted and referrals you did not ask for.
- Reach out with something specific and genuine.
- Ask for a short conversation to learn, not a job.
- Be useful in that conversation. Bring a point of view.
- Stay in light contact afterwards.
- When a need appears, you are the name that comes up.
When you do apply, apply warm
Sometimes there is a formal process you have to enter. Enter it warm: with a referral, or after a conversation with the manager, so your application is one the team is already waiting for rather than one of three hundred they have to wade through.
Common questions
Does this really work without applying?
Yes. Many roles are filled through referral and direct contact before any public process. Even where a formal application is required, entering it warm changes the odds completely.
Is this just networking?
It is networking with a specific target and a purpose, done a few weeks before you need it. That is very different from showing up at events handing out business cards.
How long does it take?
Expect weeks of light, genuine contact before it pays off. It is slower to start than applying and far more likely to end in an offer.
Reach the people who do the hiring, before the job is posted.
