Do online job applications actually work anymore?
The honest answer: sometimes, but far less than they used to, and almost never as your main strategy.
Online applications still result in hires. People get jobs through portals every day. But as a strategy to build a search around, they have quietly stopped working, and it is worth being honest about why.
What changed
Two years ago a decent application had a fair chance of reaching a person. Then candidates began writing applications with AI, so volume exploded, and employers began screening with AI, so attention collapsed. The application became a document written by a machine and rejected by a machine. On top of that, a large share of postings are ghost jobs that were never going to be filled.
When applications still work
They work best when you enter them warm: with a referral, or after a conversation with the hiring manager, so your application is one the team is already expecting. They also work for high-volume, clearly-defined roles where the process is genuinely a filter rather than a formality. Cold, into a senior or competitive role, they mostly disappear.
Where to put your time
Treat applications as a small baseline channel, not the whole plan. Put the bulk of your effort into direct contact and referrals: choose a few target companies, reach the people who do the work, and turn cold applications into warm ones. That is the channel that got more valuable, and it is the one almost no one teaches.
Common questions
So should I stop applying online entirely?
No, keep a light baseline of applications, especially warm ones. Just do not let the portal be your main strategy, because that is the most crowded and least effective way in.
Do applicant tracking systems reject me automatically?
They filter aggressively, and when every CV is keyword-optimised, a better CV moves the needle far less than a human vouching for you does. That is the real reason to go direct.
What counts as a warm application?
One submitted after a referral or a conversation with someone on the team, so a human is already expecting to see your name in the pile.
Reach the people who do the hiring, before the job is posted.
